Wiring into the Consumer Unit

Proper wiring inside the consumer unit is important to ensure safe electrical operation in the home. The consumer unit controls the power supply from the meter to the house. It is considered the center of the electrical system because it is connected to all electrical devices in the home and building. It also helps prevent electric shock, electric leakage, electric overload, and short circuit. For safety, the wiring must be installed correctly. If the wiring is not done correctly, it can be dangerous or cause a fire. Therefore, in this article, LeKise will take everyone to learn how to wire the consumer unit, which will help the electrical system work safely and reduce the risk of electrical accidents.

Things to know before wiring

What to do
1. The main breaker and all sub-breakers should face the same direction to avoid confusion when using it.
2. Fasten the main breaker and sub-breakers tightly and install the busbar (electrical conductor).
3. The wire size should be selected to be appropriate for the breaker's amps.
4. The neutral wire from the electricity meter must be connected to the ground before entering the main breaker to ensure that the neutral connected to the residence has a true zero potential difference.
5. The grounding system must be installed correctly according to the electricity authority's standards.
6. Consider having an electrical system installation expert install the electrical control device.
7. Before performing maintenance or changing equipment in the electrical control cabinet, the main breaker should be turned off for safety during use.

What not to do
1. Do not connect the neutral wire of a circuit without a leakage protection device to a circuit with a leakage protection device because it may cause a risk of electric leakage or electric shock.
2. Do not use a leakage protection device to act as the main circuit, but should be used in conjunction with the main circuit breaker.
3. If the system has a leakage protection device installed, do not cross-connect this device under any circumstances. Because it may cause danger to life.
4. In case of using a fuse to control the electrical circuit, if the fuse breaks, do not use copper conductors or other types of conductors to connect instead of the fuse. Instead, you must replace the fuse or change to a circuit breaker.

How to connect the wires to the consumer unit cabinet

Wiring in the consumer unit cabinet must start from understanding the 3 types of wires that are necessary for the electrical system in the house, including:
          1. Line wire: Wires with electric current flowing through electrical equipment or light bulbs, with a voltage of 220 volts.
          2. Neutral wire: Wires with no electric current flowing, but when used with light bulbs or electrical equipment, both wires must be used together to complete the electric current circuit.
          3. Ground wire: Wire connected from the electrical equipment to allow the electric current to flow to the ground when there is an electric leakage. This increases the safety of the user's electrical use.

Wiring steps to the consumer unit
1. Connect the ground wire or ground wire to the ground bar.
2. Connect the neutral wire from the electric meter to the ground bar and from the ground bar to the neutral of the main breaker.
3. Connect the wire we have to the neutral bar below.
4. Connect the line wire from the electric meter to the line of the main breaker.
5. Connect the line wire of the electrical equipment to the sub-breaker.
6. Connect the neutral wire of the electrical equipment to the neutral bar.
(If the electrical equipment has a ground wire, it can be connected to the ground bar above.)

Additional advice

1. Select the size of the sub-breaker according to the appropriateness of the application.
For example: If your house has a bedroom, bathroom, living room, and kitchen, you can select a set of 4-6 consumer units to separate the electrical system of each room.

2. Select the size of the amps according to the electricity usage of each house.
For example: In the house, there are 1 main electrical appliance, 1 water heater, 1 refrigerator, and other minor electrical appliances. You can use a 50A consumer unit. But in the case of high electricity usage, you can use a 63A consumer unit. You can roughly calculate from the main electrical appliances in the house and add them together so that they do not exceed the amps of the consumer unit.
